So, I had some time this weekend to do a bit of research. I see there are still some people here interested in the game that are browsing the forums as guests. Which leads me to believe that you enjoyed Akarra and are still interested in it.
If somebody has the free time, there are a variety of game server/client models that have gone open source that are significantly more developed than Akarra's.
Take the server files for Akarra and use them to re-create the Akarra story in one of these newer style game engines and you can bring some life back into the old game. Build out the spells and class tree, then work on the items and npc/monsters then finally re-create the Akarra world map. With a small team of people(3-4) that are fairly adept at such things you could probably create something usable in 6 months or so.
Here are my recommendations on existing mmorpg server and client engines that are similar enough in system that converting would not be very difficult.
rathena(2.5D, windows only, visual studio, 3d models)- Open source ragnarock client. This even already has editors pre-built to save the time of making them. There are also a few youtube tutorials.
Tales of Pirates(3D, windows only, lua scripts, 3d models)- This project is not releasing the source to re-compile the client, but the editors for mapping are in game. you can move around in game and place/remove object with your character. You will have to build editors for the items, npc and quests or directly edit the server files. There are a few youtube tutorials for this as well.
Cloud realms 2(2d,browser based, PHP/MySQL, 2d models)- Open source and development never completed, but all basic mechanics are already existing. This is probably one of the better options given that you could completely re-create the akarra feel with least effort and support all platforms of play, but also requires the most work. Basic chatting, combat, npc/monster, mapping, leveling and attribute points system are already in place. No youtube tutorials, must have knowledge of PHP SQL and web sockets to complete successfully.
Best of luck to those who are feeling ambitious!(I would already be developing this, but time simply does not allow for it these days )
